Jewell Singletary [00:00:28] Last question. If there were five songs. And we're going to make this a bit broader, because I know this is hard for people. It could be five songs, artists or styles of music, genres of music that are on the soundtrack of your life. If you were to put your life to music, who would be the five songs, five artists, or genres of music that would be on that list?
Star [00:00:55] I am a real R&B like I, I listen to some other stuff, but ninety-eight percent what I listen to of R&B, so.
Jewell Singletary [00:01:03] Come on wit it!
Star [00:01:04] The soundtrack is R&B soundtrack. Right. It might kind of sound like. Miguel, he's one of my all-time favorites.
Jewell Singletary [00:01:12] OK.
Star [00:01:14] Where he's fun and playful, but when he needs to get serious, he's serious. Oh, my God, this is hard! OK, R&B. Miguel.
Jewell Singletary [00:01:24] You don't gotta think about it too much. Who do you love? Who's in your headphones right now?
Star [00:01:30] Sir.
Jewell Singletary [00:01:32] OK.
Star [00:01:33] I think that he is amazing. Sidenote though, that whole family is amazing. They're all super talented. OK,.
Jewell Singletary [00:01:40] For sure! Agreed for sure! 100%.
Star [00:01:43] Right?! oK, Sir. Miguel Roe James. Because he's nasty [laughing]. And then I'm going to bring it all the way back, because my soulful side, the person who I could never get tired of her voice is Anita Baker.
Jewell Singletary [00:02:02] Oh, come on. Yeessss!
Star [00:02:05] She is. Just like I will never get tired of listening to her and the things that she says still resonate with me.
Jewell Singletary [00:02:13] A lyricist for sure.
Star [00:02:15] Yes! Is that four or five?
Jewell Singletary [00:02:19] Listen, I'm not going to disrespect Ms. Anita Baker and try to sing her song. That was four. Give me one more.
Star [00:02:26] OK, one more, I'm going to say ta ta ta ta ta ta. Shoot, girl, give me two more seconds. I know you got to go.
Jewell Singletary [00:02:41] Ain't no rush. Ain't no rush.
Star [00:02:41] Look I be real serious when it comes to music, so I don't want to throw no B.S. out there, OK?
Jewell Singletary [00:02:49] Listen, you know the soundtrack of your life is going to have way more than five songs, so.
Star [00:02:53] It definitely would. OK. OK, wait, hold on. I got it right here for the last long because I'm trying to think of what the name is because I don't want to sing it and sound crazy as hell. [laughing] All right. You know that song? I'm going to just embarrass myself right now. It's a rap song, and he's like: "Black, Black, Black so Black! [laughing] All we got to be black whips, Black something something something something. Black, Black, Black Black, Black" [laughing].
Jewell Singletary [00:03:27] Yes, I love the Instagram videos that go around with that. And like the groups of people that be dancing. They be so groovy with it! I don't I do not know the name of the artist nor the song either. But I know exactly what you're talking about.
Star [00:03:39] Let me see. Oh, I got it. The song is called Black featuring ASAP Ferg and the artist is actually Buddy, so shout out to Buddy and ASAP Ferg for that song because we need it. Yeah.
Jewell Singletary [00:03:57] Anthem for sure.
Star [00:03:59] Yes.
Lena Di [00:04:01] OK, that one, hmm. So I would say my current, you know, mood where I am, I would say happy by Pharrell definitely on there. Let's see. I'm terrible with names, right? But like, I just love Soca, like Afro beats and all that stuff.
Jewell Singletary [00:04:27] Yes! You can give me a genre or artist.
Lena Di [00:04:30] Yeah, OK. So all of Soca [laughing].
Jewell Singletary [00:04:32] All of that! All of that!
Lena Di [00:04:32] Afro Beats, like those .... That's so I'm at four now.
Jewell Singletary [00:04:38] I love it! Yes.
Lena Di [00:04:40] And then. Like, you know, MJ has always been an inspiration to me, and I feel like a lot of his music is definitely inspired me in many ways, like in terms of like inspired me to dance when I was so shy and would never show my family. But I would watch him secretly and practice routines so that when I actually started actually performing, people actually were surprised that I was a good dancer as well as myself. But like, you know, listening to the lyrics now as an adult, you know, like actually hearing his songs, I think definitely had an impact on me. In many ways.
Jewell Singletary [00:05:19] I love it. Aww RIP.
Lena Di [00:05:24] Yes. RIP, to the king!
Jewell Singletary [00:05:29] Was that five?
Lena Di [00:05:31] Well, because I lumped genres together, so, yeah
Jewell Singletary [00:05:36] I'll take that [laughing] listen, round up, Jewell! Roundup! [laughing] I appreciate you, Lena Di. Thank you!
Jewell [00:05:48] And then last question, name five music artists that would appear on the soundtrack of your life.
Keyana [00:05:54] Oh, OK, Fiona Apple, people don't know that about me, but I love her.
Jewell [00:06:01] Fast As You Can is one of my favorite songs to this day!
Keyana [00:06:06] I'm glad you know who she is, and you know her music, but Fiona Apple is my life. Erykah Badu, Jill Scott. So now we're up to three. Another soundtrack of my life would be, Maysa, she's a jazz artist, I love her.
Jewell [00:06:22] OK.
Keyana [00:06:23] And then Sade, these are. Oh, no, let me take oh I don't I don't want to take anybody off, but I got to put India Arie up there because India Arie, like her by herself, is the soundtrack to my life. I swear she and I are the same person. Everything she writes is like, those are my words. Those are my feelings. So I can't believe I named her last. But she's the soundtrack to my life for sure.
Jewell Singletary [00:06:42] You saved the best for last! it's all good India Arie is a bonus! We love her too!
Nigel [00:06:46] Oooo! one of them would be New Edition.
Jewell [00:06:51] OK.
Nigel [00:06:54] I would have Stevie Wonder. I would also have..mmh? Soundtrack of my life? This is a good one. Um. Nas. Who else?
Jewell [00:07:22] That's three, give me two more.
Nigel [00:07:24] I know. I know, I know. I gave you Nas over Jay Z, just just because I love Jay-Z, don't get me wrong, but I find myself as I get older listening to a lot of Nas.
Jewell [00:07:39] Interesting. I do feel like I need to circle back to Nas' catalog as well.
Nigel [00:07:43] Yeah, some of them are, some of them are great like. But I strictly stay with Illmatic. It Was Written.
Jewell [00:07:50] Classics.
Nigel [00:07:51] And even his newer bodies of work like I stay around those things but let's see who else am I like. This is hard because I'm a real big fan of music and you've learned this about me.
Jewell [00:08:06] Right. Which I'm surprised. I want to give you any suggestions. But what about Earth, Wind, and Fire?
Nigel [00:08:12] That's in mind... That's in my head. Don't get me wrong. That's in my head.
Jewell [00:08:16] Ok.
Nigel [00:08:17] I don't know if if I want to say Earth, Wind, and Fire or Isley's.
Jewell [00:08:25] I mean, final two slots...? I don't want to force though. I want to force it.
Nigel [00:08:32] I don't know because it's like I love a lot of different styles of music. So it's like.
Jewell [00:08:38] So we know... This is not a comprehensive list. There will be more than five artists on the soundtrack of your life. We know this.
Nigel [00:08:44] OK.
Jewell [00:08:45] Don't think about it too much.
Nigel [00:08:48] All right. I would have to say the Isley's.
Jewell [00:08:53] OK.
Nigel [00:08:54] And then last but not least, I would have to say Michael Jackson.
Jewell [00:09:01] Come on with it. I love it. MJ King of Pop.
Nigel [00:09:04] Yeah, I would have to because like, man, a lot of people love that Triller album.
Jewell [00:09:11] Yeah.
Nigel [00:09:11] I'm a Bad fan.
Jewell [00:09:13] Mmmh. OK. Ok.
Nigel [00:09:15] I remember that album. I remember every single music video I like. I used to I watched that tape so much that they had to tell me that the tape broke.
Jewell [00:09:26] Awww [laughing].
Nigel [00:09:28] Like my my my cousin was living with us at the time and she would like I would sit by the radio and wait for Man in the Mirror to come on.
Jewell [00:09:39] Awwww.
Nigel [00:09:39] I would, I would look at the "We are the World" record and I would point out who everybody was like my Michael Jackson and that's Lionel Richie.
Jewell [00:09:51] Awww! Rest in peace, MJ. For real.
Nigel [00:09:53] Yeah.
Gabrielle [00:09:54] Oh, I love this. Five music artists. Victory. Victory Boyd got me through the year she came out. Oh, my gosh, the album was life. I even flew into L.A. from Florida to see her and I stayed there one to two days just for her. So Victory Boyd. We all need a little Beyonce in our life. I'm not even a Beyhive. I'm not even in the Beyhive like that, but that live album was monumental.
Jewell [00:10:34] Yea it was!
Gabrielle [00:10:36] It was a moment, was it not? So it was everybody a little Beyonce. Oh my goodness, it's so hard to do. Who am I listening to?
Jewell [00:10:49] Yeah, who's in your playlist right now?
Gabrielle [00:10:54] Let's see? Chiilllee, Baby Shark.
Jewell [00:11:03] [Laughing].
Gabrielle [00:11:03] I'm not even lying it's right here.
Jewell [00:11:06] [laughing] It's gotta be your list, not the baby's.
Gabrielle [00:11:10] OK, so I'm really into the 90s right now and CeCe Peniston is giving me life right now.
Jewell [00:11:15] Yeeeessss! Come on! Yesssss!
Gabrielle [00:11:17] OK!
Jewell [00:11:18] I love CeCe Peniston!
Gabrielle [00:11:19] Come on CeCe! Anderson Paak is giving me life.
Jewell [00:11:23] OK. That's a good one.
Gabrielle [00:11:25] And we got one more.
Jewell [00:11:27] Yep, one more.
Gabrielle [00:11:27] A Tribe Called Quest is always in [inaudible].
Jewell [00:11:30] Alright! Come on, Bonita Applebum. You gotta put me on! I love it, dope!
Joe [00:11:36] Oooo! Sheesh! Yea, Common, for sure. J. Cole. I would say, Faith Evans. Lauryn Hill and one more would be, I would say Kanye.
Jewell [00:12:13] Dope! I love it, I don't think anyone has said any of those five before. I love it.
Joe [00:12:20] Yeah, yeah, yeah. I feel like they all signify my style as like a person, personally, and then, like, sound-wise, too, so.
Jewell [00:12:30] Yeah. oooo, those are going to be fire additions to the playlist.
Milly [00:12:37] [laughing] Beyonce, Shakira. Alicia Keys. Tasha Cobbs. That's for right now. Give me one more, because I'm blanking on the fifth one. Fantasia.
Jewell [00:13:04] OK, I like it, I like it. Thank you so much.
Milly [00:13:10] I was trying not to say Cardi B.
Jewell [00:13:13] You can say Cardi B, do we want to switch out Fantasia for Cardi B?
Milly [00:13:17] Yes, put Cardi B because she's from the Bronx.
Jewell [00:13:18] All right! We're going to put Cardi B on the list. I fucks with Cardi! I like her!
Jewell [00:13:25] And the last question, if you can name five music artists that would appear on the soundtrack of your life.
Javier [00:13:36] That would be in Spanish [laughing] Gilberto Santa Rosa. Victor Manuelle. Tito Roja. Was that three?
Jewell [00:13:48] Yes, three.
Javier [00:13:50] La Selecta, and El Gran Como.
Jewell [00:13:53] Thank you! I appreciate you! I am going to email you so you can spell all those out for me so we can find us artists.
Tyrone [00:14:01] oooo! That's not fair, Erykah Badu is hands down.
Jewell [00:14:09] Number one!
Tyrone [00:14:11] Yes, that will forever be number one on. I say I like Common. Let's see. Jhene Aiko. Jesus, so many. Londrelle.
Jewell [00:14:36] Dope. Good one. One more. Give me one more.
Tyrone [00:14:43] Let me give you one more. I'll say either... Ooo that's a good one man, it's like a toss-up. So many artists. Awww you can't do this to me, Jewell, because an artist is going to feel like...an Artist is going for, like, damn, Ty, you don't bang with me?
Jewell [00:15:10] [laughing] Listen, it's all good! We know it's going to be more than five songs on the soundtrack of your life. It's all good.
Tyrone [00:15:15] Right, I'll go with Floetry.
Jewell [00:15:20] Ooo nice one! Dope. I appreciate that.
Melvin [00:15:24] Cat Stevens. Sade. Myself, Deep Red. Aww man....
Jewell [00:15:43] Two more.
Melvin [00:15:44] Two more. Two more Fela Kuti Zombie. And ummm... Michael Franks.
Jewell [00:16:03] OK, dope! I'm excited you mentioned a couple... I've never heard of Michael Franks or the first person you mentioned.
Melvin [00:16:10] Cat Stevens.
Jewell [00:16:11] Yes, Cat Stevens. I didn't recognize that name either.
Melvin [00:16:13] Cat Stevens. Imagine if Justin Bieber, at the height of his fame, just walked away, and that's what Cat Stevens did back in the day, and he became Muslim and he gave all of his publishing to build schools.
Jewell [00:16:32] Oh, wow.
Melvin [00:16:33] So in his song... He has a song called Peace Train. A lot of popular like kind of like soft pop rock songs, but he left the game. He came back once. He came back once, 20 years later, and he said, I'm just coming back to make money from my foundations. And he went away again. So I love it. I just. Not only do I love this music, but I've always had that ability to leave a situation at it's material height, and know that everything was going to be OK.
Jewell [00:17:05] ooo that's dope! I definitely want him check out.
Melvin [00:17:07] And then and Michael Franks, his voice is just happy, like. Yeah, like when you hear Michael Franks. It's Franks F-R-A-N-K-S. And yeah, it's just like he's got a happy sound and I put that on whenever I'm feeling down I feel my energy shift and I put that on.
Jewell [00:17:26] ooo dope! I'm going to make a playlist with everyone's responses once I finished the last interview for this season. So I'm excited to
Melvin [00:17:33] O OK.
Jewell [00:17:35] put everyone's music on it. And you're the first person to say Fela, so I'm glad we can put Fela on there. And we're going to put some of your music on there too so this is dope!
Melvin [00:17:42] Come on!
Juanita [00:17:44] ooo! OK, um. Oh my God. So the first thing that came to mind was Earth. Wind and Fire.
Jewell [00:17:54] Yaasss! Come with it!
Juanita [00:17:56] Patti LaBelle. Oh my God. "Rock with You" What?! Rock Creek Park. Like, oh my God. Serious, serious House like booming, basing, House. Oh, my God.
Jewell [00:18:13] Yes.
Juanita [00:18:15] And then on the other side of that, Joss Stone. A little chill. And some serious blues with some vodka and tonic water with a twist of lime.
Jewell [00:18:26] Oh come on! Got the whole vibe! Got the whole vibe!
Juanita [00:18:29] Oh yea [laughing] it is a vibe! It is absolutely a vibe.
Jewell [00:18:35] I love it!
Juanita [00:18:35] And then last but not least, Ain't No Stopping Us Now.
Jewell [00:18:40] Come on! Perfect note to end on! cause we on the move! We got the groove!
Juanita [00:18:46] Yesss! Yes!
